Buying unfinished oak furniture, and completing the steps necessary to finish the wood veneer or solid surface can save hundreds, and in some cases thousands of dollars for the home owner. People will generally buy a lesser quality product that is finished and ready for use, then travel this alternative route in saving money. The reason that there is such an industry available for furniture buyers is that the retailers know how labor intensive, and expensive the staining of wood can be, and additional applications of a clear coat protectant can drive up the cost even more.

By shopping at a local or even online unfinished oak furniture store you can buy the furnishings of your dreams that prices at fine furniture retailers would normally preclude you from even shopping in due to your economic level. This in a sense makes for a level playing field when buyers want the same quality as someone who may have more disposable income than they have at the present. Oak is the most popular wood to use in home furnishings. It costs usually twice as much or more than solid pine, but half as much as mahogany or black walnut.

The unfinished furniture industry is a great place for young singles and newly married couples to start building up their home inventory of much needed furniture. For example a couple could purchase an unfinished oak dining room set, apply a couple of wood stain coats, and paint a lacquer coat to finish from Friday To Sunday evening without any trouble, and save five to eight hundred dollars in the process. If the amateur finishing is done properly, no one will have to know except the people who did the staining themselves.
